Lucalox Sodium with internal electronic ignitor

Since the introduction of the high pressure sodium lamp, the requirement for an external high voltage ignitor has always been seen as an undesirable system component.  This is particularly relevant to the lower wattage lamps where the inclusion of an ignitor in the circuit means a significant size to the luminaire which must house it.To satisfy this requirement, low wattage lamps with internal ignition devices such as this are produced.  Traditionally though, internal starters are based on moving bi-metal strips such as in the glowbottle starter or thermal snap-switch.  Both are inherently unreliable and frequently fail before the arc tube reaches its end of life.  The FEC internal electronic ignitor found in Japanese Iwasaki lamps works outstandingly well, but is protected by international patents.

This GE lamp also makes use of an electronic ignitor for total reliability, but it is located outside the lamp and within the skirted portion of the metal base.  Via a third wire in the stem press it provides a high voltage signal to a probe on the side of the arc tube to facilitate ignition.
